Redefining Home: Kate Shifman’s Inspiring Journey from Brooklyn to Lisbon

Sometimes, a simple vacation can change the course of your life forever. For Kate Shifman, a Brooklyn native, a spur-of-the-moment trip to Portugal became the beginning of an extraordinary new chapter. Seven years later, she’s made Lisbon her home, and her story of transformation is nothing short of inspiring. Her journey offers valuable insights and a heartfelt perspective on relocating to Portugal, a place that captured her heart and changed her life forever.

A Serendipitous Start: Falling in Love with Portugal

Kate’s journey began in the most unexpected way. “I came here on vacation randomly just to check it out,” she recalls. At first, it was the sunshine and stunning landscapes that drew her in, but it was the warmth and kindness of the Portuguese people that made her stay. “I moved for the sunshine, but I stayed for the people,” she shares with a smile. Her story is a testament to how a single decision, often made on a whim, can open the door to a whole new life.

When she first arrived, Kate spent her days exploring Lisbon and beyond. She drove along the coast, fell in love with the dramatic cliffs, and immersed herself in the vibrant culture. What struck her most about Lisbon was its unique blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy. From the intricate tiles that adorn its buildings to its bustling markets and lively social scene, Lisbon offered a fresh start in a place unlike any other.

Navigating Challenges: The Realities of Relocation

Moving to a new country is rarely without its challenges, and Kate’s journey was no exception. Bureaucracy, language barriers, and cultural differences are common hurdles for anyone relocating to Portugal. However, Kate’s approach was pragmatic and resourceful. “I did the really lazy thing,” she admits with a laugh. “I paid a lawyer to do everything for me: getting my NIF, social security number, and opening a bank account.” For her, this decision was an investment in peace of mind.

Kate’s advice to others considering a move to Portugal is refreshingly candid. “Even if things seem impossible or completely confusing, it all somehow works out,” she says. She acknowledges that the initial process can feel overwhelming, but once the logistical hurdles are behind you, life in Portugal is deeply rewarding.

Finding Community in Lisbon

For Kate, Lisbon’s charm lies not only in its beauty but also in its sense of community. “It’s a very charming city,” she explains. “The quality of light is beautiful, and the architecture is stunning.” But what truly makes Lisbon special for her is its vibrant social life and the friendships she’s built over the years.

She chose her neighborhood carefully, seeking a balance between convenience and tranquility. “It’s close enough to the center but far enough so that I’m not inundated by tourists,” she says. Living near the waterfront has been another highlight for Kate, as she finds peace and inspiration by the water.

Building a New Dream: The Birth of IOMA

Kate’s relocation story took an entrepreneurial turn with her latest project, IOMA, a co-living and co-working space situated along the Tejo River. The inspiration behind IOMA comes from the Japanese concept of “ma,” which translates to “the space in between.” For Kate, this space represents the opportunity to recharge, create, and connect.

“I wanted to create a cultural center where people come to exchange ideas, create art, and benefit from an atmosphere of creativity and knowledge,” she explains. IOMA is not just a place to stay or work; it’s a sanctuary designed for holistic well-being and sustainability. With seven bedrooms, shared living spaces, and even a meditation greenhouse, IOMA is a manifestation of Kate’s vision to foster a sense of community and purpose.

“Our lives are becoming much more flexible,” Kate notes. “More and more people can travel while living. But after a while, you realize you’re lonely, and you want connection. Co-living spaces like IOMA give people the chance to feel like they’re part of a family.”

The Emotional Journey: From Loneliness to Belonging

Moving alone to a new country can be isolating, and Kate’s early days in Lisbon were no exception. She arrived with only her cat for company, navigating a new city and culture without a built-in support system. But over time, she built a life filled with meaningful connections.

“Lisbon has become my home,” she says. “I’ve made friends from all over the world, and the city itself feels like a friend.” Her experiences highlight the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone to build a community, a lesson that resonates with anyone embarking on a similar journey.

Lessons for Aspiring Expats

Kate’s story offers valuable lessons for those considering a move to Portugal. Her first piece of advice? Be patient and adaptable. “Things might not always work as quickly or smoothly as you’d like, but that’s part of the charm,” she says. She also emphasizes the importance of investing in professional help if needed. “Sometimes, it’s worth spending the money to make your transition easier,” she advises.

She also encourages newcomers to immerse themselves in the local culture. Whether it’s learning the language, exploring the city’s hidden gems, or simply engaging with locals, these experiences enrich your life and help you feel more at home.

Lisbon’s Changing Landscape: A Thoughtful Perspective

As Lisbon continues to grow in popularity, it faces new challenges. Issues like housing affordability and gentrification are hot topics, and Kate is deeply aware of their impact. “Lisbon is going through a painful and unfair reality,” she says. “We as people who come here have a responsibility to contribute positively to the community.”

Kate’s perspective is both thoughtful and hopeful. She believes that expats can play a role in uplifting the local community, whether through economic contributions, cultural exchange, or simply by being good neighbors. Her own work with IOMA is an example of this commitment, as she strives to create a space that benefits both locals and newcomers alike.

A Life Transformed

Kate Shifman’s story is more than just a tale of relocation; it’s a testament to the transformative power of embracing change. From her first encounter with Lisbon’s cliffs and coastlines to building a thriving community space, Kate’s journey is one of resilience, vision, and heart.

For anyone considering a move to Portugal, Kate’s experiences offer both inspiration and practical advice. Her story shows that with courage, adaptability, and a willingness to connect, it’s possible to not just relocate but to truly thrive in a new country.

Lisbon, with its charm, vibrancy, and sense of community, is a place where dreams take root and grow. And as Kate’s journey demonstrates, it’s a place where you can find not just a new home, but a new way of life.
