Rediscovering Life: Michelle & Jesús’ Journey from Idaho to Porto

In the heart of Porto, Portugal, amidst the cobblestone streets of the charming Lapa neighborhood, a love story unfolds—not just between a couple but with a city that has become their new home. Michelle and Jesús, a couple from Boise, Idaho, embarked on a transformative journey that would redefine their lives.

This is their story.

The Leap of Faith

Michelle and Jesús built a beautiful life in Boise, Idaho. It was where they went to college, fell in love, and laid down roots. But deep down, they felt the pull of something greater. They wanted to explore, to immerse themselves in a new culture, and to embrace the unknown.

“We wanted to see Europe and the world,” Michelle recalls. But where to begin? Spain was initially at the top of their list. However, a friend's suggestion to consider Portugal changed everything. “She told us, ‘A lot of what you’re looking for in Spain is in Portugal, and the process of getting there is a lot more straightforward,’” Jesús explains.

It was advice that led them to Porto - a decision that would shape their new beginning.

Why Porto?

For Jesús, the city felt like a homecoming. Having grown up in Bolivia, the laid-back lifestyle, the warmth of the people, and the slower pace of life in Porto resonated deeply with him. “It’s very much the way people are in Latin America,” he shares. “I feel at ease here.”

Michelle was drawn to Porto for its accessibility and size. Coming from a mid-sized city, they felt Porto offered a softer landing compared to Lisbon. “It’s easy to get around without a car, and the airport gives us the freedom to explore both Europe and the US,” she notes.

Settling in Lapa

Their new neighborhood, Lapa, turned out to be a perfect fit. Known for its welcoming atmosphere, it’s an area that checks all the boxes: close to a churrascaria, a good coffee shop, and the iconic Francesinha sandwich. “A local told us that’s how you know you’re in a great neighborhood in Porto,” Michelle laughs.

But beyond the amenities, it’s the authenticity of Lapa that has captured their hearts. The sense of community and the vibrant yet peaceful streets make every day feel special.

Challenges and Triumphs

Relocating to another country is never without its hurdles. For Michelle, patience became a key lesson. “The process requires time, and that’s okay. It was part of the slower pace of life we were seeking,” she reflects.

Jesús emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help during the transition. “Having experts by our side made the entire process smoother and less stressful,” he says.

Embracing the New

Life in Porto has been an adventure in discovery. Whether it’s hiking through the city’s hilly streets or savoring local delicacies, Michelle and Jesús find joy in the everyday.

“There’s never a boring day here,” Michelle says. “Every walk feels like an exploration, and there’s always something new to uncover.”

Jesús adds, “The diversity of culture and the vibrant energy of the city make it feel alive. It’s a place where you can truly embrace life.”

Advice for Aspiring Expats

For those dreaming of a new life abroad, Jesús and Michelle offer simple yet profound advice:

Be Open to Change: Relocation is as much about adapting to a new culture as it is about rediscovering yourself.

Have Patience: Embrace the slower pace and let go of expectations tied to instant gratification.

Get Professional Help: The right support can transform an overwhelming process into a seamless experience.

A New Chapter in Europe

As Michelle and Jesús look back on their journey, they’re filled with gratitude for the path they chose. Moving to Porto wasn’t just about changing their address—it was about reshaping their lives and embracing a world of possibilities.

For anyone contemplating a similar move, their story serves as a testament to the power of taking that leap of faith.

“You don’t have to do it alone,” Jesús says. “With the right guidance and an open heart, a whole new world awaits.”
