From the Bustle of Cities to the Magic of Meco: How Roya Built a Musical Haven in Portugal

For many, the idea of moving to a new country is a daunting leap into the unknown. But for Roya Elghanian, it was a pursuit of inspiration, a longing for creativity, and an embrace of the unexpected. Originally from Iran but raised in London, Roya spent years chasing the vibrancy of global cities, hopping from New York to Tulum, from Marrakesh to countless other places, before finally finding home in Portugal.

But what made her stay? What was it about Portugal, and more specifically, the small, coastal town of Meco, that captured her heart? Her journey is one of discovery, perseverance, and ultimately, creation, giving birth to The Casa Colab, a unique musical community that now thrives in this idyllic setting.

Chasing the Sun and Finding a Home

Roya’s early years were spent navigating the dense urban landscapes of London, where grey skies and unpredictable weather eventually led her to question her place in the world. She sought refuge in the energy of New York, reveling in its ceaseless motion and boundless opportunities. But even the city that never sleeps couldn’t hold her for long.

“Once I came to my senses and didn’t want to live with the weather anymore, I moved to New York,” Roya recalls with a smirk. “And then I just roamed around the world.”

Her travels led her to the sun-kissed beaches of Tulum, the bustling souks of Marrakesh, and an array of cultures that each left their mark on her soul. But it wasn’t until she stumbled upon Portugal that she felt something different. A sense of belonging. A creative spark.

A New Chapter: The Birth of The Casa Colab

Roya moved to Portugal in October 2020, embracing the uncertainty of a new life. By May 2021, she had already begun making an impact, taking over a hotel just two minutes from where she currently lives. With the world still reeling from the pandemic, she transformed that space into a month-long artist residency and music retreat, offering musicians and creatives a sanctuary in a time of global uncertainty.

That experience planted the seed for what would become The Casa Colab, a haven for artists to grow, nourish their craft, and collaborate.

“I’m a big dreamer,” she admits. “But my name actually means ‘vision,’ so I think I’m just following my purpose.”

Casa Colab isn’t just about music; it’s about collaboration and healing. Roya envisions it as a hub for projects that uplift and inspire, bringing people together to create something meaningful.

The Magic of Meco

While many expats flock to Lisbon, Porto, or the Algarve, Roya found herself captivated by the charm of Meco, a coastal paradise just 40 minutes south of Lisbon.

Meco is a hidden gem known for its pristine beaches, rugged cliffs, and untouched landscapes. Unlike the tourist-heavy areas of Portugal, Meco retains its authenticity, offering a tranquil escape for those looking to immerse themselves in nature and a slower pace of life.

What Makes Meco Special?

- Untouched Beaches: The coastline near Meco is famous for its wild beauty. Praia do Meco, the main beach, stretches for miles, bordered by golden sand dunes and striking cliffs. Here, you can experience breathtaking sunsets and long, peaceful walks.

- Expansive Nature: The region is nestled within the Arrábida Natural Park, a protected area known for its dramatic landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and biodiversity. It’s a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone looking to disconnect from the modern world.

- The Hidden Lagoon: Just a short drive away, the Lagoa de Albufeira is where fresh water meets the Atlantic, creating a serene and picturesque setting. It’s a popular spot for paddleboarding, kite surfing, and simply soaking in the beauty of nature.

- A Vibrant Night Sky: “A month ago, I saw 60 meteorites in five minutes,” Roya shares, describing the celestial spectacle that graces Meco’s clear night skies.

- A Growing Expat Community: Over the years, Meco has quietly become home to a thriving expat community, drawn by its unique blend of nature, culture, and affordability. Unlike other hotspots in Portugal, Meco retains its local charm while welcoming newcomers who seek a creative and peaceful lifestyle.

Building a Dream, One Note at a Time

Beyond music, Roya envisions Casa Colab as a multifaceted retreat space.

“I’m going to turn this area into a yoga deck,” she shares, gesturing towards a scenic spot overlooking the ocean. “You’ll be able to do yoga with ocean views.”

Since launching Casa Colab, Roya has already hosted two intimate gatherings called ‘Casas,’ where 15 artists came together to play music for 15 straight hours. Her plans are grander, with more events and collaborations in the works.

The Challenges of Moving to Portugal

Roya’s journey to Portugal wasn’t without obstacles. Like many expats, she encountered the infamous bureaucratic maze that can often feel overwhelming.

“The most difficult thing?” she muses. “Trying to get paperwork done. Trying to have people even pick up the phone.”

Portugal’s laid-back pace, while one of its greatest charms, can be frustrating when dealing with legal formalities. Yet, Roya insists that patience and persistence pay off.

“If you persist, there’s magic at the end.”

Roya’s Advice for Aspiring Expats

For those considering a move to Portugal (or anywhere abroad), Roya offers a practical yet inspiring piece of advice:

“Give it a test pilot for three months. Think of it like a long holiday. See if you like it. If you do, stay. If you don’t, go home.”

This approach removes the pressure and allows for an organic connection to develop. No major commitments, no irreversible decisions, just an open-minded adventure with the possibility of a life-changing discovery.

Creating a Life, Not Just a New Address

Roya’s story isn’t just about relocating. It’s about finding purpose, embracing change, and crafting a life that aligns with one’s passions.

Through The Casa Colab, she has built more than just a home; she has built a community. A place where creativity thrives, where music pulses through the air, and where people from all walks of life can come together to share in something greater than themselves.

She has also built a home in a place that values personal growth. “Portugal attracts a lot of people who are into self-improvement,” she notes. “It’s a retreat-like country.”

Portugal, with its unique blend of cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and thriving artistic scene, provided the perfect backdrop for her journey. And for those who dream of a life that breaks away from the conventional path, her story serves as proof that it’s possible.
